Why do I have to do work when it's so nice and sunny?

Well, it's been a few days since I've posted. I've still been feeling sick the last few days with a head cold but haven't been able to really stop and get well. Sunday was a busy day with church (I'll have to talk about that later- it was a neat "service"!), and watching softball practice (some people from church are in a league- Amanda and I are the "Scorekeepers/Babysitters":)), and then I headed to High River with Amanda and Peter for the bible study. I had never been to High River before and it was a beautiful drive. I enjoyed the bible study; it was very laidback which I like and it's going to give me a chance to get to know some of the other people in church. I still feel like a bit of a visitor- not sure why but I hope now that I have a bit more time I can get more involved. When I arrived home, I got to go for a walk with Heidi (my walking buddy who has since left for the Rock. I'll miss our walks, Heidi!:)). Monday, I worked at home on some thesis stuff and had to head to Walmart to pick up some stuff. Yesterday, I came down to the office to work on my last assessment report for my practicum (Yes, I am done classes, but had a case that has continued past that I have to complete) and spent the evening working on thesis stuff again. I have a meeting tomorrow with my supervisor so I need to have all of the data entered. Today, I am again at the office working on the report (had to go see the kid again to do a couple of extra things this morning) and will be going to the African Children's Choir and the jazz club tonight. Will likely be up late afterwards to finish the thesis stuff. So, to say the least, it has been a busy week. Hopefully, I will feel better soon. I will write in the next few days to tell you how everything goes this evening.
Til then, love and prayers

Why is it so cold?

So yesterday it was 23 degrees. Today, it snowed. What is up with that? The changes in weather has caused me to have a headache and to feel sick again today. I guess my stressed body isn't up to fighting off colds yet. Still recovering!:) Plus, on top of everything, I'm fighting insomnia. I have been having trouble sleeping the past few nights even though I am so tired.
In regards to the bible study, I ended up leaving with my ride after Survivor and didn't get to stay for the actual bible study. It is such a long night for me either way, just trying to get there and back. I was actually kind of glad to leave with my friend because she drove me all the way home. I don't enjoy walking home late at night! So, I'm going to have to think about whether I will keep going or not. Survivor was interesting but I can take it or leave it. I am able to join another bible study that occurs every second Sunday afternoon. Going to it this week so I'll see what it's like and decide.
Finished my lessons for the LDAA and had the first group today. It went really well! Only six kids and they left saying how much they enjoyed the group and couldn't wait to return next week! That certainly made me feel more confident. I have a meeting to "officially" get hired on Tuesday (long story but basically I'm hired because I worked for the LDAA but a private school runs the group for them and they want to meet with me and see my resume and such just for formality reasons). I'm getting a little frustrated with my family groups with the Children's Village. My Thursday one got cancelled and my Monday one looks like it'll be going ahead but it got moved back another week. We'll have to wait and see how it all goes.
So, I am coming to the realization that I have to start doing some work now. Got an email from my thesis supervisor asking about progress and so I want to make sure I'm actually making progress!:) This week will be a little busy as I have a few meetings to finish things off for my practicum (this past week was Spring break for the Catholic board so I wasn't able to do it this week). Also, in response to my "In Need of a Girl's Night Out" post, the girls from school are planning on going to a jazz club on Wednesday night to see one of our professor's daughters perform. Should be fun! And the same night (earlier in the evening), the African Children's Choir is performing- hope you remembered Amanda! I am very excited!
Anyway, I'm going to watch some TV and head to bed. Long day tomorrow and a busy week ahead! I will post again soon to fill you all in!
'Til then- love and prayers

Lazy Days of Summer

Well, it might only be April, but it certainly seems like summer to me! The sun is shining brightly and it's like 20 degrees outside today! This week, I have totally been lazy, enjoying not having to go anywhere or having deadlines to meet. It's been great! I have slept in the last few days and have spent most of the days in pajamas. Yesterday, I finally started work on my lessons for the LDAA workshops and have been finishing it up today. But it's been slow going and I'm okay with that!:) Tonight, I am finally able to make it to Survivor bible study at Peter's and Amanda's. I am not too thrilled about watching Survivor (sorry to all you Survivor fans!) but I am excited to enjoy the company of others. I haven't been to a study since before Christmas! It's been way too long! I will let you know how it goes!

In Need of a Girl's Night Out

Has anyone else ever felt this way? When I was in high school and in Wolfville, Girl's Nights in/out seemed to be a regular occurrence. I have so many happy memories of six or seven girls watching movies, eating junk food, and having girl talk. I don't believe that I am that much of a girly-girl, but there's something to be said about girls being able to bond in this way. And it is such a great way to de-stress! As I get older, more of my girlfriends have significant others that they tend to spend their free time with and Girl's Nights Out are few and far between; despite attempts to organize them, schedules and such get in the way. I miss them! I am sure that if I ever get a significant other for myself, that I will understand where my girffriends are coming from. But still, I think I will always need a night out with the girls! I have had the pleasure of spending the past two years in my program with a great bunch of girls! However, again, due to our busy school schedules, we never really bonded outside of the school walls. But now, we are trying to plan some activities so that we can stay in touch. I really hope that this pans out- it will be weird not seeing these girls I have seen on a weekly basis. And of course, as mentioned, my sister is moving west in the fall to attend school and so I am sure I will get some girl's nights out with her. But again, she has a significant other so we'll have to wait and see. And I certainly hope that I don't have to wait until then!:)

P.S. Does anyone know how I can fix my picture below so it's not overlapping the words? It is so bugging me!!!

P.P.S. Is anyone out there an Alias fan? A two hour episode tonight! Yippee!

Year in Review

It has been quite a while since I have written you all about what has been going on in my life. I believe the last mass e-mail I sent out was during Christmas 2004. So, here is an update:

Winter 2005- I continued working on my Master's degree. The courses kept me busy but it wasn't as stressful as the fall semester. I was able to pick up a job as a research assistant with a professor within the Education faculty and worked on two separate projects with her through June. It certainly helped having some extra money coming in and it was a great learning experience. But it definitely made me realize that I do not desire doing research for a job!:0) I also heard back from the grant I had applied for and ended up receiving a SSHRC Master's scholarship. The funding started this September and has been a godsend in terms of helping me to become more independent from my parents and being able to pay for more of my living expenses. The winter term ended with a friend visiting from Sask. and I was finally able to visit the Calgary zoo. Fun times!

Spring/Summer 2005- After completing my research job, I had the wonderful opportunity to take on the job of a Social Skills Counsellor with the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta - Calgary Chapter (www.ldaa.net). From the end of June until the end of July, I was able to spend some time closer to the mountains in Kananaskis Country as we had residential camps for children with learning disabilities and ADHD. It was certainly an adventure but very tiring as well. I had many experiences that I will not soon forget. August was spent back in Calgary doing day camps for the same population. Again, lots of fun and a little less stressful as I was able to go home at the end of the day. Lots of horseback riding, swimming and crafts were had!:) Personally, things were going well too. Earlier in the summer, I had found out that friends were moving to Ontario to take jobs with the Salvation Army. It was saddening to have them leaving as I only had a few close friends here in Calgary and was just starting to feel settled. Unfortunately (and fortunately at the same time!), things did not work out and they returned to Calgary in August. I was also fortunate to stand up at their wedding and so it was an exciting month helping them prepare for their big day and then to celebrate at the end of the month with them. My parents also arrived at this time for a visit. Much of their visit was spent sprucing up my apartment and my home is now a cozy, comfortable place that I enjoy spending time at. We also had fun shopping and visiting Banff and Drumheller. September soon rolled around and school began once again!

Fall 2005- This fall, I began my second year of my Master's degree. This meant taking on a practicum as well as doing work on my thesis. Both my practicum and my data collection took place within the Calgary Catholic Separate School District. I enjoyed both immensely, although it was very busy. A lot of time was spent waiting for buses and travelling all around the city. I continued working with the LDAA on Saturdays facilitating both a Social Skills program in the mornings for children with ADHD (ages 8-12) and with teenage boys making a movie in the afternoons. Early in the fall, I was able to make a trip to Saskatoon to attend a LDA national conference. It was very enjoyable and I was able to visit a friend for a few days as well. It was nice to get away but it certainly made me realize how much I love my mountains! And how much this beautiful city is feeling like home! The following week, another great surprise occurred! A good old friend from Acadia (Mitch for those who know him or have heard me talk about him!:)) was visiting and I was able to spend some time with him! It was so great to reminisce and to catch up. I had been going through a bit of a rough spot with my faith but, just like always, he was able to understand me and to help me talk it out. He is getting married this summer which still blows my mind! See more about this below! The fall semester ended and I was so glad to head home for a month to rest and to spend time with my family for the holidays. My parents had renovated their kitchen which was a very nice surprise!

Winter 2006- I returned to Calgary in January and had a very busy, busy, busy semester ahead of me. I was completing four courses for my degree along with two practicums!!! I was also continuing my thesis data collection! I really felt that I had no life outside of school! I am also doing some work with the Salvation Army Children's Village acting as a facilitator for family workshops and eight Tuesday evenings were spent on this as well. But I survived the winter and am now enjoying a breath of fresh air. I gave myself the Easter weekend to stop and relax for a while. Now begins the writing of my thesis. I am hoping to complete and defend it by July. Then I will hopefully find a placement to begin my provisional year, heading towards become a registered psychologist. It is certainly amazing to realize that I have completed a Master's degree. It boggles my mind and in many ways I feel so unprepared! But I am sure it will all work out!

Spring/Summer 2006 plans- Well, it is now the middle of April and I have many things to look forward to. As I mentioned, the next couple of months will be spent immersed in my thesis work. It will be time-consuming but I am at least free from classes and can use my time as I wish. I am continuing work with the Salvation Army and will likely be spending two nights a week doing the family workshops (I am supposed to be but they have to make sure they have enough people registered). I have also been asked by the LDAA to take on the psychologist's role (under supervision of an actual registered psychologist) for a spring Social Skills Workshop for children with learning disabilities who are shy or anxious. It is a little daunting to take on such a role but I am very exciting to take on the challenge. At the end of June, I am very excited to say I will be flying east to not only visit my family and attend my sister's graduation (Yay for Kristen!:)) but also to visit friends in Wolfville and to stand up at Mitch's and Anastasia's wedding! I am so excited!!!! It will definitely be a highlight to the year and I hope to see many people I have not seen in two years. Upon returning to Calgary, I will hopefully finish up the thesis and spend the rest of the summer working with the LDAA's day camps again (haven't officially decided on this yet though). In September, my sister and her boyfriend will be moving to Calgary- I am very excited about this too! It will be nice to have family near and we are excitedly making plans for all the things we want to do when they arrive. I will also hopefully be working as a psychologist by then. Not sure where at this point but likely with the Calgary Board of Education. It will mean continuing to live on a student budget but the experience will likely give me a good foundation to continue my career on. I plan to continue working with the LDAA and the family workshops to help supplement my income.

Anyways, I think that is all. I know, a VERY long post but I wanted to fill you all in on what has been happening in the past year and a half. Now, I can refer to things that have happened and you'll know what I am talking about!:) Hopefully, I can keep up with posting!
Until next time- Love and prayers

Well, I thought I would join the blogging world so here is my blog! Not sure if my life is exciting enough to share with the world but thought it might be a nice way to stay in contact with all of you that I cannot see on a regular basis. Please feel free to comment and to share your stories with me!
